This is Chinese experience: put politics, law, national security under the control of the Chinese themselves. Cooperating with other countries in the economy. China old saying: Do not give it to other people if you do not like it. So China will never interfere with the internal affairs of other countries.
I wish you could have gone with the morning train.. the view of elephants, zebras in Tsavo National Park is breathtaking, Plus the view of the ocean on the uplifted railway line as you approach Mombasa Terminus is something else.

The Uber driver is on point. The Chinese mind their business. For them its about business and business alone. So I think the best way to deal with them is to mind your business, and make sure to mine from the relationship as much as possible while it lasts.
If you keep watching this channel, you will notice that most street level people are quite informed and can easily articulate issues of the day.

This was thrilling to watch and you captured the journey well. Now my biggest problem is the whining nature of Kenyans, we are too cynical of everything. Yes, governments are seldom liked anywhere in the world even when they do great things for their populations. The SGR was constructed in a record 3-4 years, from Mombasa to Nairobi, a distance of 500km. It was to replace the snail pace train otherwise called the Lunatic express that was just an eyesore and a drainer for the exchequer. The SGR was constructed to haul containers and transport people quickly obviously to leverage on efficiencies, economy etc. Much is talked of the cost of SGR but mostly it is just politics. Everything has a price but I choose to look at the bigger picture. SGR is a wise investment and it will pay for itself in the long run since it is a long term project.
As much as I appreciate your optimism, you cannot downplay the importance of people who are skeptical about the costs. You and I know how much corrupt our country is, and if such opposition stops we won't have a country by tomorrow.

Although I consider myself reasonably informed, the images of the trains and the train station still blew me off - for a moment I forgot it was in Africa and thought it was in China. I guess we are all heavily biased by a lot of selective news reports.As to the Taxis guy, I think he is also biased in some way too. Intuitions aren't always correct. Serious academic research shows that Chinese companies on average hire 85% to 90% of their workforce from locals. About the no-string attached funding philosophy of China, it's perhaps an unfortunate reality, but I'd like to add two points: 1) The IMF approach, though sounds noble, in reality leads to endless deadlock and stagnation. It's said perfect is the enemy of good. Perhaps this saying applies here. 2) Chinese investments have mechanisms to avoid corruption. For example, Chinese loans very often do not go through the governments of the host countries. They go directly to the companies carrying out the infrastructure projects. This by no means will root out corruption completely, but it certainly helps.

Those railway tracks were first put down by cheap Indian and African labour. Indians were brought in by the British from India.(not from the US, lol). Their plight was captured in the movie, "The Ghost and the Darkness" staring Val Kilmer.
We used to take the old train in the 80's, it was like the Orient Express, it was an amazing experience. I remember looking out the window watching the train snake round corners with children running alongside. When you got to Mombasa you felt you really had travelled to a different place as the land slowly transformed with palm tress and white sands. Luckily we had a sleeper, but third class was just benches and must have been a real hardship
I don't know what the driver did in China for 15 years but still has no idea about the basic of Chinese foreign policy: not interfering in other countries internal affairs. If you want China to build the infrastructure in that short period of time and fix the local political problem, you're expecting too much, and from the wrong guy. African should have their own opinion regarding their relationship with China from their own experience, not just blindly copy what the bias western media made up.
There are enough countries that like to pay attention to the affairs of other countries and like to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
