Unusual messages are appearing on ship tracking systems in the Strait of Hormuz as tensions rise following US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Some vessels are broadcasting signals claiming Chinese ownership or crew identities as they approach the narrow waterway. The signals are transmitted via the Automatic Identification System, which transmits ship identity and location. Shipping traffic through the strait has dropped from about 138 vessels a day to reportedly around eight. The passage carries roughly 20 million barrels of oil daily, nearly one-fifth of global seaborne oil trade. Oil prices and shipping costs have increased. China, a major buyer of Iranian oil, is holding talks with Tehran to ensure safe energy shipments.
