In China, people buy Teslas for two main reasons—half for the technology, and half (if not more) for the marketing. Elon Musk’s personal branding has been incredibly successful in shaping Tesla’s premium, innovative image.
In contrast, BYD buyers are more diverse: some choose it for affordability (BYD offers many budget-friendly models), others for its strong technical capabilities (BYD excels in nearly all core EV technologies), while some are even discouraged by BYD’s marketing. The company struggles with branding—its very name "BYD" (比亚迪) was chosen arbitrarily, and in some Chinese dialects, the pronunciation sounds like a crude insult ("B\*\* Y\*\* D\*\*",son of B).
If BYD had Tesla’s marketing prowess, its sales could easily double.

10 years ago Xiaomi wished they were Apple, you could see the way they designed and marketed their products clearly followed the path of Apple. Look at Xiaomi now, achieving things Apple aimed to achieve yet failed, such an inspiring story.

Xiaomi (and arguably Oppo) was the first Chinese company that tried the new model. Before them Chinese products were 70% as good as western made ones, at 40% of the cost. Their model is to build something just as good, but for 80% of the price. That's increasingly the model for new Chinese companies but now they're making products that are BETTER, at 80% of the cost.

In Brazil you can see now a lot of Chinese cars everywhere! BYD and GWM are the most common, but more brands are entering the market as well! I want to replace my GM with a Chinese electric car now, which requires way less maintenance and does not expend gas!

Nice interview but still missed some crucial points: people still reviewing an ultra smart EV like they are reviewing a regular gas car, this is the car you can talk to in PARAGRAPHS, rapid command with no breaks then interrupts and give more commands (like plan my trip among to attractions in west side of LA, say something like turn on the air conditioning and massage, then add another destination in the middle), then finally asking the car "what's the building in front of you", casually talk and have it translate your conversation to audially Spanish for your passenger ... not as in preset phrases like "Turn on the air-condition" as in some half intelligent Electric Cars sold here in America. Lidar, 360 Camera, HUD, Height adjustable suspension, refrigerator submarine graded steel Aluminum casting all come standard …

The Tesla you buy in Australia are made in China. And Tesla are bare bones on the feature front. I have owned multiple Teslas back when there was no other option. Now there are options they can feel like dinosaurs sometimes. A good example is the power outlet. Tesla disabled it unless the car is on, so you can't have a fridge without draining power so camping is limited. But BYD have it enabled which here in Aus is a big deal.

S&P Global Ratings recently upgraded Xiaomi's credit rating to 'BBB' with a stable outlook. Branching out from consumer electronic is a good basis for expanding into the EV business but EVs is a congested sector and will take time to reach profitability (excluding government subsidy). BYD/ MG (and others) have shown the world market the value and the speed of improvement of Chinese industry.

why worry about it? The car is a copy from other luxury cars. Where is the ethical and value when operating a company? The car is built so fast, shortcuts of number of regulations, not to mention 3 girls died in the recent accident.

Don't judge a book by its cover. Xiaomi car is called "Industrial waste garbage" by its previous target audience in China owing to the potential safety risk and rough details in workmanship. The hood spoiler was proved to be fake by fans and many so called "leading design" was just cheap imitations of luxury brands.

The thing with big successful car brands is that they will buy smaller ones and branch out with their own cheaper or more expensive brands. Just like what EU and US makers do. Which mean Xiaomi can grow to become HUGE. I already know the french will struggle real hard to stay relevant once the Chinese enter for real in EU

Unlike a certain tech celebrity in the US, the CEO of Xiaomi, Jun Lei, never wastes a single minute on social media. And that's why he can make better cars. The same logic also applies to college athletes, there are only 24hrs, you either spend time on completing your homework and studying for your exams, or you spend time practicing football, so your college wins the next match. This isn't surprising to me but I think everyone should consider that this comes with large subsidies by the chinese government. Let's see how the race to the bottom of price will affect all of those chinese companies, which are already producing way too many cars. I feel like this is just another step in the house of cards that is chinese EV manufacturing.
