Legacy brands were hoping to make Southeast Asia the dumping ground for ICE but we here are very price sensitive. Even the less efficient EV is still way cheaper than the best ICE, and now that oil-producing countries like Malaysia are planning to cut petrol subsidies for the mid to upper-income bracket, interest in EVs is skyrocketing.

Agree with the "dumping ground" mentality. For too long, African and South-east Asian people have been forced to use second-hand vehicles from Japan and America, even in terms of infrastructure, while being expected to pay those countries a high price they don't deserve (See Japan's recent attempt to sell old retired rail cars from 80s to Indonesia). No wonder those regions are now siding with Chinese manufacturers, allowing, for the first time, people here to enjoy modern and advanced products at an affordable price.

Great news that Asia will soon be ravaging the already pathetic sales of Toyota and other diesel manufacturers. They have all had it too good for too long. Now is time for BEVs to shine.

As a Singaporean I would say EVs and South East Asia is a match made in heaven.
Lots of city driving here with tons of traffic jams. EVs would thrive as they are very efficient in such circumstances.  
Also, unlike temperate countries we have to deal with global warming EVERYDAY (since we are in a tropical region) and like u said, direct pollution from the fumes created by a lot of traffic jams (although this is a lesser problem in Singapore).

There are 2 major road blocks for it taking off rapidly in Malaysia. #1 Petrol/Gas - as a major oil producer the government still enjoys alot of kickbacks from the local oil producer, Petronas. If they start backing EV, than should every household make the switch to EV, that would impact Petronas's bottom line. #2 There are 2 major auto players in Malaysia. With exception to Proton (which Geely owns 49.9% of it), Perodua the other local automaker has not made any significant investments into EV. EV infrastructure is also pretty spotty given the first reason mentioned. If these 2 things are address coupled with even more lower costs EVs coming into the market, then I forsee it taking off here in Malaysia. Btw, through Geely's management of Proton, they have recently started to sell Smart EV in Malaysia

BYD Atto 3 electric cars gaining traction in Hong Kong. Although Tesla dominates the Hong Kong electric car market, I am seeing more and more Atto 3 eVs and the price is actually more expensive compared to mainland China and I think in the rest of SE Asia as well. I got mine Atto 3 delivered in April this year and I just found out my friend who visited us yesterday got her brand-new red Atto 3 delivered in June. I see a couple of BYD E6s and vans, but very few if any BYD Seals, Hans or even Dolphins. If the range and boot/trunk space can be improved, I think the Atto 3 could be a winner for BYD!

Very few, in Macau you can see a much greater variety of EVs than HK. I also got my Atto 3 in January. Only complaint is that the infotainment system is far inferir than mainland chinas. I hope they offer a one time upgrade to change the systems to be the same as mainland China, including the charging port. In the future almost everyone will be driving into the mainland in a regular basis since the "Northbound" scheme was launched

The average Japanese cars look neat and clean from the outside. But actually they are shells over the same old grandfather designs, accessories and gadgets. Whereas the average Chinese cars look modern and futuristic from the outside. Inside they feel futuristic (like the modern Chinese cities) with modern, advance and well-positioned accessories and safety gadgets. Had it not for the decades of western smears on the perception of China, people will not hesitate to buy Chinese cars.

It is the same in electric two wheeler in india its fully dominated by Indian 2w companies and sold over 1 million ev but Japanese are selling none.

The Chinese govt is smart. Sell EVs then, since they make most of them, sell the solar panels to make the power to run the EVs.
Oh, you need to fix and expand your electric grid? China is like the sole source for certain grid level components that you see at electrical substations. If we ever had a massive solar flare most nations would be waiting on China to provide the large parts that would be needed to get the grid up.
On and on it goes. The US and Europe are reaping what they sewed when they let companies outsource to China and elsewhere. As well as letting the students from other countries into our colleges and universities to become engineers and scientists.
We should have enacted a law that would require them to stay in the US and work as an engineer for at least a decade with automatic green card if they stay. Maybe they would have and not gone back to compete with us?
Maybe we still need this law?

Gas stations are far and few between and when you find one they are out of fuel

Everone has E power. Yes dirty coal fired power but 1000% better than gas. EvCar no so much EvTruck is the norm in China

China knows EvCars and if China ever hits America

These (non-US and non-European) markets are where the traditional car-makers make much of their profits. As their profits fall in these regions, so their overall global viability is weakened. Companies cannot afford to lose markets where they derive such profits - so while EV adoption in some major markets may be slower (leading some commentators to believe there's no threat), no company can sustain losses for very long. Tony Seba's preditions ("game over for ICE") is becoming a reality - and quite rapidly.
